After unexpectedly taking the reins on the family oilseed rape farm when just 19 years old, Adam Palmer was faced with the challenge not only of running the enterprise, but also of creating a viable future for the farm and his family. The honey and mustard dressing, along with the other dressings produced on-site, are born of his rising to the challenge and adding value to the already high-quality rape the chalky soil of the Yorkshire Wolds naturally yields.
It’s a family team: Adam, his wife Jenni and dad Ben make a local product, incorporating Yorkshire honey and wholegrain mustard from a York-based preserve maker, with their own award-winning rapeseed oil. What’s more, the Palmers have set about safeguarding the farm near Malton for future generations with bee-friendly grasses, a waste cardboard compactor and solar panels.
What the judges said:
The judges were impressed by Adam’s ingenuity in diversifying and rejuvenating the family business while safeguarding the surrounding environment. They respected the collaboration with other local food producers to create a product that showcases the strengths of the region.
