The brand-new wine collection you need to know about
Lidl’s Winemaker’s Selection of New World wines has launched just in time for Christmas…
It’s that time again. Christmas is fast approaching and we’re starting to think about presents and preparation. Food and drink is, of course, a fundamental part of this, and no festive celebration is complete without a wine rack stocked with a bottle for every occasion to see you through the celebrations.
Lidl’s biggest collection of New World wines comes just in time for the festive merriment. The high-quality, great-value wines have been carefully selected from the most renowned winemaking regions of Australia, South Africa and New Zealand, and with bottles starting from just £5.79, the range is a welcome addition to Lidl’s reputable wine offerings.
To help you choose from the tempting selection, Lidl’s Master of Wine Consultant Richard Bampfield has revealed the key attributes of each region featured in the Winemaker’s Selection.
Australia
The Clare Valley has established itself as the best place in Australia for growing Riesling. The Riesling in the new collection is light, flavoursome and confident. The Barossa Valley, meanwhile, just north of Adelaide, is the heartland of Australian Shiraz, known for its bold flavour.
Coonawarra in South Australia, where the vineyards are cooled by breezes off the Southern Ocean, is ideal for fresh, crisp Chardonnay. It also has a reputation for producing the country’s best Cabernet Sauvignon, featuring excellent varietal expression from the region’s famous ‘terra rossa’ (red clay) soil.
New Zealand
If Sauvignon Blanc is New Zealand’s best white grape, then Marlborough Pinot Noir can claim the crown of being the best red – and Lidl has included both in its Winemaker’s Selection.
The Awatere Valley is acknowledged as one of the top spots in New Zealand for growing Sauvignon, so you’ll be pleased to find a bottle from there in the collection. A sparkling Sauvignon Blanc – a relatively new addition to the market – also features. If you’re a Sauvignon fan, this dry sparkling wine is a must.
South Africa
Paarl is a warm area inland from Cape Town, ideal for ripening Shiraz, which is proving very successful in South Africa. Originally from the Loire Valley in France, Chenin Blanc has made its mark in Paarl, where lovely dry whites are produced.
Whatever your tastes, you’re sure to find wines that will hit the spot for you and your guests this Christmas.
