What they do:
Sally and Bill Lugg are the people behind Primrose Herd in Redruth. The venture started after Sally took on managing her father’s traditional-breed large black pigs – as well as her own gloucestershire old spots – after he passed away.
Primrose Herd is deeply enthusiastic about heritage breeds and takes immense care in rearing their pigs. Animal welfare is paramount and the animals enjoy a happy, free-ranging life.
Slaughter and butchery are done on-site, and the carcasses are turned into a range of pork joints, cured and smoked meats and charcuterie. The Luggs sell their wares at farmers’ markets and supply directly to local restaurants.
As members of the Rare Breeds Survival Trust and the British Pig Association, Primrose Herd demonstrates devotion to all things porcine. Sally is a council member of the Pedigree Pork and Education committee and is always eager to educate the public about traditional-breed pigs.
What the judges said:
The judges were astounded by Primrose Herd’s relentless work ethic and their commitment to making a wonderful product from contented pigs.
