What they do:
As third and fourth-generation farmers and butchers, the New Close Farm Shop family are well known in their village. Owned by husband and wife Jim and Gill Armstrong, who are supported by their two sons, Tom and Ed, the farm shop produces award-winning meat products for local customers, food festivals and charity events.
From field to fork, the Armstrong family keep a watchful eye over every part of the business. Their bacon, sausages and pies are made from high-welfare Welsh and Gloucestershire Old Spot sows raised on their family farm. The pigs are allowed to rootle and wallow at will on organically managed pastures and the abattoir is only 15 minutes from the farm. Everyone who works for the business, whether it’s the butchers, bakers or shop assistants, are hired on the basis of passion for the trade and commitment to selling quality produce.

The East and West Midlands judging panel liked how New Close Farm Shop explained “why they do what they do and how they do it” in a succinct but informative manner. They praised the shop’s “straightforward” approach and noted that the team are clearly proud of what they grow, rear and create.
