What they do:
Crispin Reeves began his honey-making enterprise in 2005 with just a single hive. Twelve years on the number of hives has since grown to 300 and Haughton Honey is now part of a regional honey bee farmers’ cooperative –honey from 2,000 other hives across several English counties supplements Haughton Honey’s own batches of the sweet nectar.
Haughton Honey is cold-harvested the traditional way and left un-pasteurised to help retain the natural nutrients and enzymes that would be lost in the pasteurisation process.
The company works with farmers and landowners to restore hedgerows and encourage good land husbandry helping to benefit wildlife in the local community. The business has grown and expanded thanks to crowd-funding and co-operative alliances, and Crispin often features on local and national news representing of the North West’s bee farmers.
What the judges said:
The panel commended Crispin for his enthusiasm and dedication to raising the profile of English honey in the national media. The judges applauded him for understanding the important role bees play in agriculture and the work he has done with local landowners to protect bees’ habitats.
