What they do:
Darren and Julia Quénault of Manor Farm in St Peter became the only independent dairy farmers in Jersey in 2006, breaking away from the island’s milk supply company in order to sell their produce directly to the public.
Taking milk from their small herd of grass-fed jersey cows, they transform it into a vast range of artisan dairy products including un-homogenised milk, cheeses and ice cream, and sell them at their on-site farm shop.
To celebrate Jersey’s unique produce, they devised an ice cream flavour that uses a traditional jersey speciality known as black butter – a concoction of heavily reduced cider, apples and spices.
The pair keep farming methods simple and natural, eschewing artificial fertilisers, pesticides, herbicides and fungicides, and only use antibiotics when the cows’ welfare is at risk.
