Alison Roman cooks up Nothing Fancy in this week’s podcast: listen now
In the last podcast in the cookbooks series, I catch up with New York Times and Bon Appetit columnist Alison Roman as she chops her chillies and cooks up a sizzling steak from her latest book Nothing Fancy.
The phrase “nothing fancy” tumbled out of Alison’s mouth almost accidentally one day and is supposed to embody the attitude that she wants you to have whilst cooking from the book.
If you’re the kind of person who loves to feed others but hates the word entertaining then Alison’s no-frills approach to dinner parties shows you that you can do something different without it leading to a tonne of added stress.

In town to promote her new book, I asked Alison to pop over for some lunch and a chit chat and, as is often the case, Alison ends up doing the cooking. She wows me with an incredible homemade salsa (made with fresh chillies from our neighbours at Borough Market) that really elevates a simple, seared butcher steak.
Having spent a lot of her life travelling for both food and pleasure, Alison touches on the subtle differences she’s picked up on between American and British cooking culture, as well as the ideas and inspiration she loves to take back to the states with her.
As you may already be aware, Alison is good at making life and food look good (her 255K Instagram followers can attest to that). But, in a similar vein to the attitude of her cookbook, the key is not trying too hard… “Food is already gorgeous, so you don’t have to try too hard to make it look beautiful. As soon as you start making food just to make it look nice, no one will want to cook it.”
