24 hours in Brighton with Semone Bonner

When it comes to its food and drink scene, Brighton is booming.

The seaside city has something for everyone but what should you do if you have just 24 hours there?

Semone Bonner, the head chef at The Set, guides you through a day of must-visits – from the famous lanes to late night cocktails on the seafront and everything in between, here’s what he thinks you should do on your visit.

5.30am: Jack & Linda’s Brighton Smokehouse
Jack Mills is a former fisherman who runs this dinky smokehouse on the Brighton seafront with his wife, Linda. Get down there early enough and you can see Jack smoking the seafood before it goes on sale at their shop under the arches.

10.30am: Brunch at Silo
Brighton’s zero-waste restaurant has been scooping rave reviews and their food is as admirable as their commitment to sustainability. Stop by for brunch and choose from dishes like coddled egg, blood pudding and kimchi or buckwheat pancakes with bacon.

11.30am: Wander the Lanes
Take a stroll through Brighton’s famous Lanes and have a browse through the independent shops, boutiques and cafes. Check out Choccywoccydoodah for all things chocolatey or visit Boho Gelato for one of Seb Cole’s amazing cones.

1pm: Lunch at Curry Leaf Café
Refuel with some South Indian street food at this cracking little restaurant in the heart of the Lanes. Their dosas are not to be missed and they’ll do you an amazing “Thali platter” for around a tenner.

3pm: An afternoon beer at Brighton Beer Dispensary
This proper pub specialising in top-notch craft beers is the perfect spot for an afternoon pint. Choose from a rotating selection of brews, listed on the big bar-side blackboard, and order some oxtail nuggets to snack on – from our pop-up kitchen, Dizzy Gull.

7pm: Dinner at Bincho Yakitori
Modelled on Japan’s izakaya drinking and dining dens, Bincho serves a range of flame-grilled meat skewers. Simple food, big flavours and perfect for sharing.

9pm: Drinks at The Cocktail Shack
Finish with some sundowners at our next-door neighbours The Cocktail Shack, where you’ll find some of the best drinks in the city. Bag yourself the cosy window seat and watch the i360 illuminate the Brighton seafront.
