What they do:
T Soanes and Son have been in the poultry business for more than 70 years. Their chickens are grown as slowly as possible and fed on a combination of locally milled wheat – and whatever grubs and bugs the birds can find in the rich expanse of Yorkshire Wolds pasture over which they’re free to roam.
The team, many of whom have been working with the Soanes family for decades, are dedicated to safeguarding the animals and the environment; they use biomass boilers, three wind turbines, solar panels and a heat recovery unit. Outside the farm, the Soanes are committed to their surrounding community, using many goods, services and labour within a 30-mile radius of their farm.
What the judges said:
The judges were won over by this producer, saying “the welfare of the chickens and the environmental credentials are very impressive”. They praised the substantial impact of their environmental efforts.
