What they do:
Sisters Zennor, Lamorna and Veryan Pascoe are the seventh generation to run Cusgarne Organic Farm near Truro. After becoming disillusioned with the use of chemicals on the farm, their parents moved it into organic production in 1988, and the girls have continued with that approach. One of Cusgarne’s star products is their organic beef. The mild Cornish climate allows their small herds of cows to spend summers grazing on lush pasture. During winters they eat hay and silage cut and baled from the farm’s own fields. An abattoir three miles away finishes the beef, which is hung for three weeks. The Pascoes sell it in their farm shop and also supply it to the well-respected Hotel Tresanton in Cornwall. Dedicated to sustainability, Cusgarne’s Farm Shop is made from stone from the farms’ fields, reclaimed wood from the local docks and is part-powered by solar panels and a wood-fired boiler (the wood comes from their own hedges). They produce one bag of rubbish per week, with everything else recycled or repurposed.
What the judges said:
The judges were impressed by the family’s devotion to organic land cultivation and well considered animal husbandry, and were pleased to see a clear passion from a young generation of farmers.
