Beers for the weekend: Badger ales
By Izzy Brimeau
I recently visited Dorset to explore Badger’s very own brewery at Hall & Woodhouse. The trip included the family history of the brewery, a tour and tastings of both their standard and exclusive ales.
I spoke to beer sommelier Nikki Rowe about which dishes pair best with Badger ales. With Nikki’s help I have selected three bottles and three very different dishes to complement them.
Golden Champion
This is a crisp, fruity ale complete with subtle elderflower aromas. It’s the colour of pale golden straw and has a floral palate with hints of tangerine. Pair with smoky flavours such as sweetcorn pancakes with smoked salmon and lemon and spinach ricotta.
Blandford Flyer
The Blanford is a sweet medium-bodied beer with aromas of ginger and toffee. This brew has a strong spice taste which is complemented by sweet ginger. Drink alongside a spicy cheese or with kimchi on toast.
The Sturminster Beast
Badger’s 2016 Limited Edition beer is rich and malty with prominent coffee and chocolate flavours. A great drink for a special occasion and a nice match for a chocolate porter cake.
Badger ales are available at most Waitrose, Sainsbury’s and Tesco. The Sturminster Beast is limited edition and may not be available in all stores.
