The best pie deliveries in the UK
We all know a great pub or restaurant offering a fantastic pie, but many online butchers and companies are now offering options available for home delivery nationwide (with some even available in supermarkets). And while there’s much satisfaction to be had from making your own pastry and pie; popping one of these in the oven to heat up and diving in is almost as good.
There is nothing like a pie to lift the mood – whether you need it lifting or you’re already feeling great – after you eat any of these pies you’ll be feeling better than you did before.
The pies from beloved London butcher HG Walter are next level, which is no surprise if you’ve bought their meat before. On offer are chef-made chicken and mushroom, beef and ale, and lamb massaman (drool-worthy). Available from HG Walter (from £4.95).
These pub-style pies have such a generous filling-to-pastry ratio. The chicken and ham hock leek variety is packed with meat and tremendously creamy. For something a little different, try one of their award-winning veggie options: family members will squabble over their spinach and pine nut pie which is vibrantly cheesy and a real mix-up from the norm. Available from Sainsbury’s, Ocado etc (£4 each).
Great North Pie Co artisan pies
Great is an understatement: these homemade all-butter pastry pies are simply superb. So much so, The Great North Pie Co has scooped up many an accolade, including none other than the Best Pie In Britain at the British Pie Awards. We fell head-over-heels in love with the classic Lancashire cheese & onion pie: made with Dewlay’s tasty Lancashire cheese, caramelised white onion, white pepper, nutmeg & Japanese breadcrumbs. Purchase pies in boxes of 4 or 8; they’re all made fresh to order. You’ll get about four days’ shelf life out of your pie delivery but they freeze no problem. Perfect for defrosting on a rainy day – just add mash! Available from Great North Pie Co (£18 for 4 pies).
Mud Foods choose only quality, locally-sourced ingredients to create their range of multi Award Winning pies and Squiches (square quiches). Each pie is encased in luxury shortcrust pastry, which is delicately handcrafted and delightfully buttery – the recipe known only to Christian, Mud Foods’ Chief Pie Maker. Their range includes the traditional flavours of Steak & Ale, Steak & Kidney but is interspersed with modern creative varieties such as Chip Shop Chicken Curry and Pulled Pork in Sticky BBQ Sauce. Available from selected retailers and online at Mud Foods (from £4.45).
If you’re after variety, especially when it comes to veggie or vegan options, then look no further than Pieminster. Their range totals a whopping 13 pies and includes gluten-free and vegan options alongside their hearty classics such as the Moo (steak and ale) and the Free-ranger (chicken, ham and leek). We love that you can order in bulk – boxes of 4 or 12 – and you can also order for click and collect from restaurants, great for hosting pie parties at home. Keep your eyes peeled in most major supermarkets for some of their classics. Available from Pieminster (box of 4 pies from £15).
Award-winning online butcher, Parson’s Nose, known for their ethically-sourced top-quality meat, offer up some of the butteriest, flakiest pies known to man. Choose between their steak & ale pie made or their chicken, ham & leek pie… or save yourself the anguish of having to decide and order both! Available from Parson’s Nose (£5.95 per pie).
The meat produce from Farmison can be trusted. From their really good pork pie, to a family beef and potato pie to serve 4, you know you’re going to be getting top quality when it comes to pastry with these guys. We love their suet puddings for 2. Available from Farmison, from £8.95.
Ham hock, mustard, and cider come together in a Quality Chop House pie that’s as awe-inspiring to look at as it is to eat. Then there’s the vegetarian-friendly mushroom, Cheddar and leek pie that can be baked for 30 minutes for THE most comforting dinner. Each pie serves 2. Available from Quality Chop House from £14.50.
When it comes to good value, sustainable meat, Pipers Farm truly deliver. Their steak and Otter Ale pie (don’t worry, it’s ale not actual otter!), is the one that captured out hearts, but they’ve got a filling for all tastes – be that butter chicken, venison and port, or pork. Available from Pipers Farm (from £3.95 each).
Charlie Bigham is known for outstanding ready-meals, so it’s no surprise that we were impressed by their home-cooked pies. Many come in a ceramic dish: chicken, ham and leek, and steak and ale, which is a best seller. Other options are the chicken and mushroom fresh pastry pie and the sharing steak pie – which serves 4-6. Available from Tesco, Sainsbury’s Waitrose and more, from £4.50.
