Home-made granola gives your children lots of energy which is great for keeping them active. It also give you the energy to run around after them!

Home-made granola gives your children lots of energy which is great for keeping them active. It also give you the energy to run around after them!

Ingredients

  • 125ml vegetable oil, plus extra
  • 1 tsp for greasing
  • 350g oats
  • 50g wheatgerm (from health food shops or Waitrose)
  • 50g shredded coconut (from major supermarkets) or unsweetened desiccated coconut
  • 50g sesame seeds
  • 75g sunflower seeds
  • 100g unsalted cashew nuts, almonds or hazelnuts – or a mixture of all
  • 3 varieties
  • 5 tbsp honey
  • Few drops of vanilla extract
  • 200g dried fruit (such as dried mango, dried apple rings, dried pineapple, raisins, cranberries)

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 150°c/fan130°c/gas 2. Grease a baking tray or roasting tin with the extra 1 tsp oil. Put the oats, wheatgerm, coconut, sesame and sunflower seeds, and the nuts in a bowl.
  2. Pour the the oil and honey into a small saucepan and add the vanilla. Heat gently for a few minutes to melt the honey. Carefully pour the honey/oil mixture over the oat mixture and stir well to coat. Spread the granola in an even layer in the tray or tin.
  3. Bake for 20 minutes, then ask an adult to remove it from the oven and stir. Return to the oven and bake for another 20 minutes. Ask an adult to remove it from the oven and cool.
  4. Using scissors, cut the dried fruit into bite-size pieces and add to the cooled oat mixture and mix together. Serve the granola with milk or a dollop of natural yogurt.
