Mr C’s Hand Crafted Pies make 11 varieties of cold cutting pies filled with the finest Scottish ingredients, made without artificial preservatives.
Representing the UK at a food conference in Turin, Italy, Robert Corrigan (aka Mr C) noticed that many farmers were frustrated with chefs’ preference for prime cuts of meat at the expense of other decent cuts. Inspired, on his return Robert drew on his catering experience to develop his own range of pies, I for which nothing was wasted.
Ten years on, Mr’s C’s Hand-Crafted Pies remain true to this aim. Originally trading as Acanthus Pies, Robert’s wares gained word-of-mouth recognition, and in 2011 the business moved into a professional production unit where each pie continues to be made with fresh local ingredients.
Rebranded in 2013 as Mr C’s Pies, the business is proud to support the Scottish economy through its suppliers, using organic flour from Shipton Mill and black pudding and natural jelly from Ramsay of Carluke’s Scottish outdoor-reared pigs. An exception is made for the Italian lard used in the pastry for its superior flavour and texture. Robert often works with suppliers and customers to create bespoke pies, and has created a haggis, neeps and tatties filling for special Scottish celebrations.
In 2012 Robert made a return visit to Turin, taking with him his new pies packed with Scottish produce. Three days later all 244 had been sold to visitors from around the world.
What the judges said
Scotland’s panel of judges were overwhelmingly impressed with this “wonderful product”, which had them wanting to recite a Burns-style ‘Ode to the Pie’. Robert’s efforts to develop the perfect hot water pastry were appreciated, the result being described as “crisp and delicious”.
